Biography

Many studios start a photography business with some camera basics and learn to make images for weddings. I began by photographing for over thirty years before learning the wedding and portrait business end of photography. I use my background in art to create photographs that go beyond the business of documenting weddings. My knowledge, experience, and creativity enable me to offer any style of finished prints and albums.

I have been making special photographs since graduating from Arizona State University in 1974, where I studied with Jack Stuler, Eric Kronengold, and James Sandal. I also had the good fortune to have workshops with Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Minor White, Ralph Gibson, Jack Welpott, and Bruce Davidson in the seventies when I was learning the art of photography. My photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States and countless private collections.

After several years living and exhibiting my fine art photographs in Oregon and Chicago, in 1986 I became the senior photographer at The Newberry Library in Chicago, a world renowned institution with an amazing collection of rare materials. While in Chicago I had a wide variety of freelance photography jobs, as well as producing limited edition black & white prints.

Since 1998 I have had my studio on Amelia Island in Florida, and photographed over 300 weddings, discovering an affinity for capturing this special time in people’s lives, and I hope to incorporate some of these images into a fine art project. Amelia Island is a wedding destination with miles of sandy beaches, and the quaint, picturesque, Victorian seaport town of Fernandina Beach.

Eliza and Simon

My wife is the internationally renowned calligrapher and lettering artist, Eliza Schulte Holliday, whom I can occasionally persuade to lend her talents in design, lettering, and book making to some of my brides, who require something special. Our two boys Jordan and Robin are grown now, which has allowed me more flexibility to venture off my island and nearby cities, such as Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and in Georgia, St. Mary’s, Brunswick, Savannah, and Jekyll Island.

I now frequently travel throughout Florida and the United States to photograph weddings, but northeast Florida’s First Coast, and southeast Georgia are my home territory. In recent years Destination Weddings throughout the world have become popular and I have developed packages for these options as well.
